This series, inspired by the acclaimed book <a data-mce-href="https://punkunderthesun.bigcartel.com/product/punk-under-the-sun-80s-punk-and-new-wave-in-south-florida-2nd-edition" href="https://punkunderthesun.bigcartel.com/product/punk-under-the-sun-80s-punk-and-new-wave-in-south-florida-2nd-edition" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Punk Under the Sun: ’80s Punk and New Wave in South Florida</a> by Joey Seeman and Chris Potash, celebrates the rebels, musicians, artists, and sounds that shaped Miami’s underground music culture.<figure id="figure-z0dlajyoilmavy4wsl" data-full-width=""><img id="z0dlajyoilmavy4wsl" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/29AgoY8nfeEusYZFnMqfulWvinGNMbJHJnX0mK1O58KTk4sz12xN68MZ6Iui7yt8.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 95% 0%;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="1:1" data-caption="" data-positionx="95%" data-positiony="0%" data-fullwidth="true" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/29AgoY8nfeEusYZFnMqfulWvinGNMbJHJnX0mK1O58KTk4sz12xN68MZ6Iui7yt8.jpg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 95% 0%;"></figure> Charlie Pickett stormed the scene with a sound that roared like a Miami hurricane, blending Johnny Thunders’ raw menace with Sun Records’ twangy soul. His gravelly, howling vocals and razor-sharp guitars fueled anthems like “Overtown” and “If This Is Love, Can I Get My Money Back?,” capturing the gritty pulse of Miami’s streets, dive bars, and underground culture. Backed by The Eggs, Charlie’s sound was defined by Johnny Salton’s blistering slide guitar work, Dave Froshnider’s songwriting, and the ferocious primal backbeat of John “Stix” Galway (who later went on to join The Silos). Pickett’s live performances were chaotic, sweat-soaked spectacles, transforming cramped venues into frenzied celebrations of punk’s DIY ethos. Albums Live at the Button (1982) and Cowboy Junkie Au-Go-Go (1984) earned praise from Melody Maker and The Village Voice, flirting with national fame that only amplified his cult-hero status.<figure id="figure-atft60ln88mavy8m3u" data-full-width=""><img id="atft60ln88mavy8m3u" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/cuKq9RABv9HJr4dxLhX0v6T2ovJSrm8GceoZoNBCvSLzIMjaoWy55ABvM85rIPe9.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 0% 0%;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="1:1" data-caption="" data-positionx="0%" data-positiony="0%" data-fullwidth="true" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/cuKq9RABv9HJr4dxLhX0v6T2ovJSrm8GceoZoNBCvSLzIMjaoWy55ABvM85rIPe9.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 0% 0%;"></figure> Charlie’s music not only served as a lynchpin of the South Florida scene, but its influence was felt far beyond. REM’s Peter Buck was so impressed by Charlie and John Salton that he produced Charlie’s The Wilderness album (1988). Buck and Pickett worked together again on Charlie’s That’s What I Like About Miami album (2017).<figure id="figure-1sa6fnjojjmavyae9h"><img id="1sa6fnjojjmavyae9h" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/1adbmxHqxG2K96skzjoXKoXS6F7WaE8PbzMG9Ymja5XS9Xz1wWMawXbHQBbYGzEH.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/1adbmxHqxG2K96skzjoXKoXS6F7WaE8PbzMG9Ymja5XS9Xz1wWMawXbHQBbYGzEH.jpg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure> Join Reprobate Media every week this month as Punk Under the Sun spotlights the artists who defined an era. PUNK UNDER THE SUN Celebrates South Florida Punk Icon CHARLIE PICKETT

Mike Spenser, the undisputed King of Trash and Brooklyn-born rock 'n' roll icon, needs our support. From fronting the Count Bishops in the '70s pub rock scene to leading The Cannibals with their raw garage punk energy, Mike has been a relentless force in music for over four decades. As the heart of Trash Can Radio, he revived pirate radio culture and championed underground sounds on DAB. A John Peel favorite, Mike roadied for the New York Dolls, wore Lux Interior’s ring, and inspired countless bands with his gritty, authentic style.<figure id="figure-u4zypk5ak3mau95m3o" data-full-width=""><img id="u4zypk5ak3mau95m3o" src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/1f6viJzkhPPCtR8liCFaasWhuCeVsWhi8BRSVjioV7oze6D2PCZSwMpAQZRIHDhl.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="1:1" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="true" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/1f6viJzkhPPCtR8liCFaasWhuCeVsWhi8BRSVjioV7oze6D2PCZSwMpAQZRIHDhl.jpg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: center center;"></figure><figure id="figure-wwju1t2p5lmau9cysn"><iframe id="wwju1t2p5lmau9cysn" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lEDIlq4Ye6s" class="w-full bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" allowfullscreen="" data-url="https://youtu.be/lEDIlq4Ye6s?si=VPuvSfMiPF2clkhk" data-corners="default" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lEDIlq4Ye6s" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></iframe></figure> Now, facing late-stage cancer, Mike must travel to Turkey for urgent, specialized treatment unavailable elsewhere. The costs are overwhelming, and time is critical. Let’s rally for this rock 'n' roll royalty, who moved to London and gave us a lifetime of music and rebellion.&nbsp;<figure id="figure-xqezyjnrzpmau9dop3"><img id="xqezyjnrzpmau9dop3" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/2UE8MNl06xIfIoYiNOLYT1hcFBhcycsUIrrPrVblZFtfAw5C2HnQ1VwyInAL9ffh.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: undefined undefined;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="1:1" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/2UE8MNl06xIfIoYiNOLYT1hcFBhcycsUIrrPrVblZFtfAw5C2HnQ1VwyInAL9ffh.jpg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: undefined undefined;"></figure> Every donation, big or small, will help Mike fight this battle. <a data-mce-href="https://gofund.me/2dbf55f7" href="https://gofund.me/2dbf55f7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Share this fundraiser to spread the word—Forever Trash!</a> Donate now to keep Mike’s spirit rocking: <a data-mce-href="https://gofund.me/dbebb0ca" href="https://gofund.me/dbebb0ca" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe Link</a>

Fronted by the magnetic Lisa Nash,&nbsp;the dynamic frontwoman of Screaming Sneakers, who lit up South Florida’s 1980s punk and new wave scene. With her infectious energy and razor-sharp vocals, Lisa channeled the spirit of Blondie’s Debbie Harry and the raw edge of Patti Smith, delivering pop-punk anthems that pulsed with rebellion and heart.&nbsp; The band built a loyal following with their 1982 EP,<a data-mce-href="https://reprobatemedia.com/blog/punk-under-the-sun-spotlights-screaming-sneakers-in-a-raw-celebration-of-1980s-south-florida-punk-and-new-wave" href="https://reprobatemedia.com/blog/punk-under-the-sun-spotlights-screaming-sneakers-in-a-raw-celebration-of-1980s-south-florida-punk-and-new-wave" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit;" style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit;"> Marching Orders.</a> Songs like “Violent Days” delivered a sharp, energetic punch, earning them praise in punk zines and a lasting reputation among collectors. With Gary Sunshine on guitar, Bud Gangemi on bass, and Mark Evans on drums, Screaming Sneakers came close to signing with Polygram Records—a deal that could have launched them to stardom—but it ultimately fell through. Nash’s influence endured, with her later contributions to the Psycho Daisies’ 2008 album Return From Blood Island showcasing her lasting impact on the genre.<figure id="figure-3ch7awus5emak1dy56"><img id="3ch7awus5emak1dy56" src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/102XDdqQs5gu9wew9J0EGI4R1K3ocEU3AtUO1Q2rNBJV5pRDGnNSAn7hgtbpH8lL.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 65% 0%;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="1:1" data-caption="" data-positionx="65%" data-positiony="0%" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/102XDdqQs5gu9wew9J0EGI4R1K3ocEU3AtUO1Q2rNBJV5pRDGnNSAn7hgtbpH8lL.jpg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 65% 0%;"></figure><figure id="figure-5qjvorxculmak9zfng"><iframe id="5qjvorxculmak9zfng" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NHAzQ0BgbhI" class="w-full bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" allowfullscreen="" data-url="https://youtu.be/NHAzQ0BgbhI?si=fqoKPUNdG4_7zo7x" data-corners="default" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NHAzQ0BgbhI" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></iframe></figure>Beyond Screaming Sneakers, <a data-mce-href="https://punkunderthesun.bigcartel.com/product/punk-under-the-sun-80s-punk-and-new-wave-in-south-florida-2nd-edition" href="https://punkunderthesun.bigcartel.com/product/punk-under-the-sun-80s-punk-and-new-wave-in-south-florida-2nd-edition">Punk Under the Sun</a> offers a comprehensive look at the era’s key players, from the Cichlids to Charlie Pickett &amp; the Eggs. Formed in 1978, The Kids—Bruce Witkin (bass), Joey Malone (guitar/vocals), John Hanti (drums), and Depp—became local legends, packing venues like The Agora Ballroom and opening for icons like Iggy Pop, The Ramones, and Talking Heads. Their 1982 7” single, “I Wanna Be Me” and “Time to Explain”, is a collector’s gem, with the latter briefly featured in The Legend of Billie Jean (1985). Depp’s distinctive guitar tone and the band’s catchy hooks, reminiscent of The Romantics, earned a devoted following.<figure id="figure-f2cs2voi5ma00sro5" data-full-width=""><img id="f2cs2voi5ma00sro5" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/5JGfFebVB6HPLrZG9HSaJPxKwp41WAPHX9SLlOZQTKsg4v15lPTdKJzL0wBIHrpE.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 50% 30%;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="1:1" data-caption="" data-positionx="50%" data-positiony="30%" data-fullwidth="true" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/5JGfFebVB6HPLrZG9HSaJPxKwp41WAPHX9SLlOZQTKsg4v15lPTdKJzL0wBIHrpE.jpg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 50% 30%;"></figure> Managed by Sheila Witkin, The Kids thrived gigging across South Florida but chased stardom in Los Angeles in 1983, renaming themselves Six Gun Method. The shift to L.A.’s glam metal scene proved challenging, and they disbanded in 1984, just as Depp’s acting career launched with A Nightmare on Elm Street. Bassist Bruce Witkin later produced albums for Adam Ant, Marilyn Manson, and Joe Perry, and co-founded Hollywood Vampires with Depp and Alice Cooper. Reunions followed, including a 2008 Sheila Witkin Memorial Concert in Pompano Beach, where Depp and The Kids rocked 2,500 fans alongside The Romantics.<figure id="figure-00pa7tlgdma8vy42r"><iframe id="00pa7tlgdma8vy42r" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3a8e8PHK8GI" class="w-full bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowFullScreen="" data-url="https://youtu.be/3a8e8PHK8GI?si=3tUfAHusfkDna8LB" data-corners="default" data-fullWidth="false"></iframe></figure> <figure id="figure-q0bt064pyema0159xy" data-full-width=""><img id="q0bt064pyema0159xy" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/23Bd9iMjdDXukDlDbpsCssWaQCmEou7yGsdtPXyptQP4Q8OKFEnKsLGzgkowMpkg.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-sm md:rounded-md lg:rounded-lg" style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 50% 15%;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="1:1" data-caption="Photo: Debbie Sunshine" data-positionx="50%" data-positiony="15%" data-fullwidth="true" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/23Bd9iMjdDXukDlDbpsCssWaQCmEou7yGsdtPXyptQP4Q8OKFEnKsLGzgkowMpkg.jpg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: 50% 15%;"><figcaption class="body-normal text-gray-500 mt-2">Photo: Debbie Sunshine</figcaption></figure> Punk Under the Sun spotlights The Kids alongside bands like Screaming Sneakers, led by charismatic singer Lisa Nash, whose catchy pop-punk songs and rare vinyl nearly landed a major label deal.
