Garage Legend Jeff Conolly Fights Cancer – Epic Benefit Tonight with Mission of Burma, Classic Ruins & More

LYRES stand as one of Boston's most enduring and influential garage rock legends, a band that kept the raw, '60s-inspired fire alive through decades when punk and new wave scenes came and went. Formed in 1979 by Jeff Conolly (better known as Mono Mann or Monoman) after the breakup of his earlier proto-punk outfit DMZ, LYRES channeled a manic, organ-driven sound—think Farfisa-fueled frenzy, reverb-soaked guitars, and Conolly's distinctive, snarling vocals—that paid homage to '60s nuggets while injecting a fierce, uncompromising edge.

Rising from the ashes of DMZ, where Conolly had already established himself as a volatile force in Boston's underground, LYRES quickly became fixtures on the local scene, playing legendary venues like The Rat and building a cult following with their relentless energy and purist approach to garage rock. Their breakthrough came with the 1984 album On Fyre, featuring standout tracks like the explosive "Don't Give It Up Now" (famously used in commercials) and "Help You Ann," which captured the band's blend of wild abandon and retro precision. Follow-ups like LYRES LYRES (1986) and A Promise Is a Promise (1988) solidified their reputation, earning praise for keeping garage rock vital long before the '90s revival wave.

Conolly's monomaniacal dedication to his vision—earning him the nickname Monoman, though he later came to dislike it—made him a polarizing yet revered figure: talented, brilliant on keys and songwriting, but often difficult in the studio and on the road. The group lineup shifted over the years, but Conolly remained the constant, driving force, releasing records sporadically into the 2000s and beyond while influencing generations of garage and punk revivalists.

Today, in March 2026, Jeff Conolly faces one of his toughest battles yet: a diagnosis of bladder cancer. The treatment—chemotherapy, pre-surgery medications, and mounting medical debt—has been financially crushing, prompting him to launch a GoFundMe campaign to help cover costs and aim for being cancer-free by the end of the year. The Boston music community, known for rallying around its own, has responded powerfully.

This very evening—Thursday, March 12, 2026—a major benefit concert titled the Jeffrey Conolly Cancer Battle of The Bands 2026 takes place at the iconic Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge (Boston area). Doors open at 7:00 PM, it's an 18+ show with tickets around $30. Headlined by Mission of Burma, the lineup includes other Boston scene stalwarts like Classic Ruins, Unnatural Axe, Nat Freedberg (Joint), The Dogmatics, Hilken & Melissa Band, and special guests.

All proceeds support Conolly's fight, joining the GoFundMe (which has already raised significant funds) in a show of solidarity for this garage rock icon. It's a night to celebrate LYRES legacy, honor Conolly's unbreakable spirit, and help one of Boston's true underground legends push through. If you're in the area, grab a ticket and raise a glass (or a Farfisa riff) to Mono Mann—get well soon, Jeff.
